Meet Michele Crowl, a familiar force for innovation and connection in Happy Valley. She jokes that, like many, she once planned to escape to warmer climates after graduation—but it was the chance to spark curiosity and creativity right here that drew her back for her PhD. In helping launch Discovery Space, Michele discovered how this community supports those eager to build and nurture meaningful ideas. More than a decade on, that grassroots STEM effort continues to grow and inspire. On weekends, Michele sometimes wishes for the superpower of teleportation—so she could dash between all the incredible events happening throughout the county. Most days, she’s busy bringing hands-on science to life at Discovery Space and The Rivet, but she’s recently made time to soak in the sounds of local live music, especially at Manny’s downtown. For Michele, everything comes down to relationships—the way Ben met Jerry, and the world got ice cream, or how kids instantly bond by sharing excitement. She believes adults deserve that same spark of new friendship and sees Connect Happy Valley as the bridge making that joy accessible. When she helps people find their tribe or a fresh idea, Michele’s energized by the constant change here; in Happy Valley, something new is always just around the corner, ready to delight anyone paying attention.

Bernie Ryan brings decades of experience and heart to the local community, with roots stretching back to State College visits in the 1960s. Growing up in Hershey, he remembers trips to his uncle’s dentist office here. After graduating from Penn State in 1982, Bernie launched into a rewarding 20-year career as a Navy pilot, traveling the world before returning to Happy Valley to continue his journey with PSU. For Bernie, this area is simply the best for raising a family, filled with endless opportunities and outdoor adventures. His favorite vantage point is aboard his bike, pedaling the winding roads of central PA or tackling the Tussey Mountain trails. If Bernie had a local superpower, he’d choose to never grow older than 45—the sweet spot for wisdom, perspective, and energetic living. Most likely, folks will spot him riding his bike somewhere in the valley. Bernie’s reason for joining Connect Happy Valley is heartfelt; after years away, he knew this was home and would have happily handed out towels at the university just to stay here. Inspired by the endless possibilities and the generosity (plus the occasional free lunch) of local friends like Greg Woodman, Bernie is excited to help others discover what makes Happy Valley so special. To him, helping someone find their tribe brings contentment—he knows that happiness here is truly contagious.
