Happy Valley Is Showing Its Depth: What’s Opening, What’s Evolving, and Why It Matters Right Now

By Connect Crew | May 6, 2026

From bold, new concepts and casino glitz to iconic dining rooms that will be packed all weekend, this is a market in motion and meeting the moment.

This Is a “Wow” Moment

Look across the Happy Valley dining scene right now and you’ll see something bigger than a list of restaurants.

You see momentum.

New openings. Reinventions. A steady pipeline of passionate restauranteurs and a core group of established eateries that continue to feed the heart of Happy Valley when it matters most.

This is what a healthy, evolving town looks like.

The Anchors Are Still the Anchors

Start with what everyone already knows: The Corner Room, The Tavern, The Nittany Lion Inn, The Hublersburg Inn, Gigi’s Southern Table.

This graduation weekend, the cornerstone dining rooms downtown and across the region will be full. Booked. Buzzing. Operating at full capacity.

These are not just restaurants. They are institutions that anchor the experience for alumni, families, and visitors who return year after year.

And this weekend, they will do what they always do. Deliver.

New Energy Is Showing Up Everywhere

At the same time, a wave of new concepts is expanding what’s possible.

Across town and into the surrounding communities, you now have:

Fast Casual: From National Chains to Homegrown Startups
Big Chicken, Shaquille O’Neal’s fried chicken chain; national sports bar behemoth Buffalo Wild Wings; oversized-pizza kingpin Benny Leone’s; and drive-thru coffee darling, 7 Brew, have all recently set up shop in State College. Other chains like CAVA and Firehouse Subs are on their way to opening in 2026. We’ve also seen an expansion of locations for major chains like Chipotle, Dunkin, McDonald’s, and Panera across the valley.and Panera across the valley.

New, independently owned establishments like Happy Valley Live!, a Penn State themed sports bar featuring a mechanical bull and “Chef Pat’s Way” cheesesteak; local favorite, Moxmoe Pictures Famous Sandwiches sub shop; and Giuseppe’s Pizzeria by Brother’s have won over townies and tourists alike. Brooklyn Bodega Deli & Grill, Phat Patties Loaded, and American Burrito all continue to build buzz as we near their grand openings (hopefully this summer or fall).

Locals also love prepared foods and takeout from a variety of newly opened spots like Kathryn’s and the Reedsville Creamery Market.

Diverse, Global Cuisine
It’s a big moment for Middle Eastern and halal fare in State College. Within the last year we’ve seen several establishments open their doors: Fire & Fig Grill with Persian influence, Mosul Grill with Iraqi flavors, and Kitchen Garden with Turkish offerings – not to mention the expansion of Sher Halal dining locations (Sher Hot Chicken and Sher Halal Cart 2), a new location of Sizzling Bites set to open soon, and the recent opening of 98K Hamburger & Chicken.

Several new Asian-inspired restaurants have also opened in recent months: Manna Korean BBQ and Hot Pot has been immensely popular since opening in March, plus Dagu Rice Noodle bringing Yunnan-style dishes, Sora Teriyaki & Sushi, and Honeygrow have all opened in recent months; . And more are set to open soon – Kung Fu Noodle, specializing in Lanzhou beef and hand-pulled noodles, and rumors of an all-you-can-eat sushi restaurant opening in the former Noodles & Company building.

In other world cuisines, we’ve seen ghost kitchen take-out from Mya Pot Roast, authentic Jamaican; Rumba & Soul, authentic Puerto Rican; a new Honduran cuisine food truck, Fuego Grill; and the highly anticipated Paris Bakery Café set to open in downtown State College soon.

The Rise of “Third Places”

Social environments outside of home and work – the places that make life memorable – are on the rise. Openings include several new cafés, our everyday gathering spots to meet and catch up with friends, like Caramel Afternoon Pastry, Eden Valley Coffee, Shaky Hands Coffee, and Swanky Beans. We’ve also seen momentum for destination fine dining, the places we go to celebrate our special moments in life, including the very newly opened The Studebaker House, as well as the continued success of Revival Kitchen and Flour & Stone. And hate it or love it, the Happy Valley Casino, whose grand opening is planned for this weekend, saw a wildly successful soft open, bringing people together for a fun evening out from across the region.

This varied array of dining options is depth…And it is growing.

Seeing national business eagerly expanding into the State College market, major investors pouring years of work into developing the region, and enthusiastic locals giving of their time, talent, and treasure – sometimes risking it all on a new venture – to build up the community they call home with food and beverage to nourish bodies and hearts, shows that momentum of growth is just getting started.

Reinvention Is Part of the Story

Not everything is brand new.

Some of the most important movements are happening in places that have reset, reworked, or reintroduced themselves:

  • Pita Cabana rebranded as FAVA Kitchen expanded its menu and identity.
  • Hi-Way Pizza Pub West renovated its basement to add Alla Spina, a swanky music lounge serving up small plates and elevated cocktails.
  • Gemelli Bakers was acquired by Antifragile Brewing and is currently serving European-style pastries, breads, and coffee out of the brewery in the morning.
  • Grace Restaurant hired a new executive chef and completely re-worked their dining concept to focus on Italian-inspired cuisine.
  • Juana’s Venezuelan Cuisine recently reopened with a new menu.
  • Allen Street Pizza is expanding to add Indian takeout.
  • Fuji Jade Garden & My Thai added hibachi tables to their restaurant.
  • The deli counter at McLanahan’s Downtown is under new ownership as Pasti Bella, offering an updated sandwich menu and catering
  • The Nittany Lion Inn rebranded all its on-premises dining after its acquisition by the Scholar Group and recently saw the introduction of a brand-new culinary team.

Repeatedly, we’re seeing owners and staff continue to invest in themselves and expand their reach for their success.

Not Every Bet Lands. That’s a Healthy Sign

One of the clearest signals of a real market is that not everything works. The former Baby’s location on Garner Street is a good example. Bubba’s Eggs Steaks & Shakes brought early attention to a high-profile space, but after just 6 months, it has closed.

That is not a setback for the region. It’s how markets test ideas. Prime locations create pressure. Concepts are tried. Some stick. Others turn over. And those spaces do not stay quiet for long.

The Pipeline Says Everything

With some failures in the rearview mirror and a myriad of competitors, there are still more restaurants hungry for the fight. This is a market that operators believe in.

What This Means Right Now

Put it all together and the picture is clear:

  • The anchors are strong and fully in demand.
  • New concepts are expanding choice and variety.
  • Reinventions are keeping legacy spaces relevant.
  • New venues like the casino are adding capacity, extending where people can go, how long they stay out, and increasing demand for even more dining options.
  • The pipeline continues to build.

That combination creates something powerful.

Options. Energy. Movement.

Final Thought

If you are out this weekend, you will feel it.

Packed dining rooms. Busy sidewalks. Full patios. A constant flow of people moving from place to place.

That is not accidental.

It is the result of a region that has quietly built the depth to support big moments and everyday life at the same time.

Happy Valley is not standing still.

And right now, it shows.

  1. You forgot Sakura in State College. It has the best / freshest sushi in town. Not to mention their bento boxes, tempura (light not greasy), etc. Mia and Cindy offer excellent service as well. They are open every day except Wednesday. 11:30-9pm.

    1. This article is about new restaurants or restaurants that have changed or renovated recently. Sakura has been around for quite a while and hasn’t made any recent updates. That being said, I agree it’s a great spot for sushi!
